Carved by glaciers more than 12,000 years ago, the Michigan landscape is unique. With three national forests, seven national parks and two national lakeshores, it is home to 100 state parks offering hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, fishing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and other great recreational activities. Along with 650 public golf courses, Michigan really can be labelled the great outdoors.

Michigan has over 100 public beaches, some of the highest freshwater sand dunes in the world, stunning multi-coloured sandstone cliffs and the only national marine sanctuary in the Great Lakes, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron. More than 129 lighthouses, numerous maritime museums, ten shipwreck-diving preserves and historic military fortifications rim Michigan's Great Lakes shoreline.
