Cruise Baltic launches sustainable cruise indicators

Cruise Baltic, a B2B network of 32 ports and destinations in the Baltic sea region, and leading consulting group COWI have joined forces to develop ‘Sustainable Cruise Indicators’ that can be used globally to measure environmental sustainability in different cruise regions.
The company has stated that the new tool, will make measuring sustainability easier and more concrete.
The launch of the Sustainable Cruise Indicators is a result of COWI’s experience in creating sustainable solutions and Cruise Baltic’s insights in the cruise industry.
The new tool makes it possible to measure environmental sustainability with four indicators; written strategy, communication on the strategy, emission reduction during calls and management of waste and waste water.
New indicators mean "measuring sustainability becomes more transparent"
With the Sustainable Cruise Indicators, it will be easier to set goals to become more sustainable – the Nordic Region aims to be “the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030” and Cruise Baltic’s vision is to “Make cruising a sustainable vacation offer in 2030.”
Claus Bødker, director of Cruise Baltic, said: “Sustainable Cruise Indicators makes it easier and more transparent to evaluate sustainability work. By developing a tool like this, we hope to encourage destinations and cruise lines to be ambitious and to strive to be as sustainable as possible.”
Poul Sørensen, senior project manager for society, economics and environment at COWI, added: “Sustainable development is in the interest of everyone, which is why we are very proud of our work with the Sustainable Cruise Indicators. With this tool, measuring sustainability becomes more transparent and concrete for all parts of the cruise industry.”
