6 things you might not know about Edmonton

The Canadian city of Edmonton boasts many outdoor activities from camping with bison to prairie surfing and dancing under the aurora. Here are some other fun facts about Canada’s fifth largest city...
1) Edmonton is the capital city of the province of Alberta. It is also one of the youngest and fastest-growing cities in the country.
2) The city is located on the North Saskatchewan River and is the northernmost city in North America with a population over one million people. It is also the gateway to Canada’s North. Edmonton River Valley is 22 times the size of New York’s Central Park.
3) Edmonton is one of Canada's sunniest cities and during the summer can have up to 17 hours of daylight. In the wintertime, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) can be seen on a regular basis.
4) Edmonton markets itself as being a little different. It boasts the continent's first, biggest and wildest Fringe Theatre Festival and a shopping mall that, at one time, had more submarines than the Canadian navy.
5) Edmonton is a three-hour flight from San Francisco, less than a two-hour flight from Seattle, and the drive to Jasper National Park is just three and a half hours west of the city. Edmonton International Airport has over 60 non-stop national, US and international destinations.
6) For those keen to take the scenic route, Edmonton is fully accessible through Via Rail Canada. From the train you can experience the magnificence of the Canadian Rockies or the beauty of the windswept prairies.
