[28APR22] Lufthansa integrates option for carbon-neutral flying into booking
With a single click, Lufthansa customers can now easily minimize carbon emissions of their flights. After flight selection, they can further choose one of three options to fly CO2-neutral. The first option is to use SAF that is currently produced from residual biogenic materials and directly reduces CO2 emissions. A second option is to using high quality carbon offset projects run by the non-profit organization myclimate in Germany and other countries worldwide. These promote measurable climate protection by not only reducing CO2 but also locally improving the quality of life and biodiversity. The third option is a combination of the first two options.

[01MAR22] SWISS to be the world’s first airline to use Synhelion solar fuel
SWISS and the Lufthansa Group have concluded a strategic collaboration with the Synhelion company to bring its solar aviation fuel to market. This will make SWISS the first airline in the world to use ‘sun-to-liquid’ fuel. The process devised by Synhelion uses concentrated sunlight to produce carbon-neutral kerosene. With this collaboration, SWISS and Synhelion are playing a pioneering role in the production and the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels.

[23FEB22] SWISS adopts new AeroSHARK riblet film technology
SWISS is to become the first passenger airline in the world to take advantage of the new AeroSHARK aircraft skin technology to further reduce the carbon dioxide emissions and the fuel consumption of its flight operations. All twelve of the airline’s Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will successively have the innovative riblet film, which has been co-developed by Lufthansa Technik and chemicals and coatings manufacturer BASF, applied to their fuselage and engine nacelles. The resulting significant reduction in aerodynamic drag will make the SWISS Boeing 777 fleet more than one per cent more fuel-efficient, and this in turn will substantially further reduce its carbon dioxide emissions.

[04FEB22] CO₂ emissions can now be offset directly on board
Lufthansa now offers even more options for CO₂-neutral flying: Starting today, the airline is testing a new service that allows passengers to offset the CO₂ emissions of their air travel directly on board. Lufthansa passengers can take advantage of the offer on short- and medium-haul flights with Internet connectivity to and from Munich. The Lufthansa Group airline SWISS will also introduce the test offer on selected long-haul aircraft.
